What my father taught me about surviving impossible seasons

1 Insight From Me

My father, immigrated from South Korea and built a restaurant in Missouri with nothing but determination and work ethic. He passed away years ago, but in 2024, when everything fell apart, his lessons became my lifeline.

I never fully understood what my father went through until I faced my own impossible season. He left everything familiar—his country, his language, his culture—and built a life in a place that didn't always welcome him. He worked 16-hour days. He faced discrimination. He struggled with a language barrier. He built something from nothing.

When Florena was diagnosed with cancer and I lost my job, I thought: "I can't do this. This is too hard."

Then I remembered my father building that restaurant. Working before sunrise and closing late. Learning business while serving customers. Facing rejection and showing up anyway. Never complaining. Never quitting.

He didn't have the luxury of asking "Can I handle this?" He just handled it. Because his family depended on him.

That's what I learned from my father: Resilience isn't about feeling strong. It's about showing up when you don't.

My father never talked about mindset or grit or resilience. He just lived it. Every single day. And watching him taught me more than any book ever could.

In 2024, when I was blending smoothies at 5 AM, taking Florena to treatment, and interviewing for jobs in the afternoon—exhausted and scared—I thought about my father. If he could build a life in a foreign country with nothing, I could handle this season with everything I already had.

The greatest gift a father can give isn't comfort. It's the example of perseverance when things get hard.

This Father's Day, I'm grateful for a father who didn't just tell me how to be resilient. He showed me. Every single day of his life.

The Legacy Reflection

This Father's Day weekend, think about one person (father, mentor, role model) who showed you resilience through their actions, not just their words.

Write down:

  1. What impossible thing did they face?
  2. How did they show up anyway?
  3. What did watching them teach you?

Then—and this is the important part—apply one of those lessons to something hard you're facing right now.

Their legacy isn't just what they survived. It's how their example helps you survive your own battles.

Remember: Feed your mind. Fuel your actions. Find your fire. 🔥

Grit, Gratitude, & Grace Newsletter Reader 1 Insight From Me April 2024. Florena was in her third month of cancer treatment. I'd been unemployed for two months. We were $30,000 in debt. I had a job interview scheduled for 3 PM. The night before, I spiraled. Thoughts raced: "You won't get this job. You're not qualified. You're still unemployed because you're not good enough. Your wife is suffering and you're failing her." The next morning, I did something simple: I showed up. That's it. I woke...

Grit, Gratitude, & Grace Newsletter Reader 1 Insight From Me February 2024. One week after losing my job when I disclosed my wife's cancer diagnosis, medical bills started arriving. Then more. Then more. By December, we were $60,000 in debt. I remember a day I sat at the kitchen table, staring at the bills, thinking: "How can we get through this?" And then I realized something that changed how I thought about money forever: The debt terrified me more than the cancer did. And that told me...

Grit, Gratitude, & Grace Newsletter Reader 1 Insight From Me We're halfway through 2026. Most people will sprint into July without pausing to look back at January-June. They'll keep doing what they've been doing—whether it's working or not. I learned the hard way in 2024: You can't learn from a year you never reflect on. June 2024, I was six months into the hardest season of my life. Wife's cancer treatment. Unemployment. Financial stress. I could have just powered through to the second half...
