1 Insight From Me

May 2024. Four months into crisis. I had a strong mind—I'd done the mindset work, the journaling, the reflection. I had a deep faith—morning Scripture, daily prayer, spiritual grounding.

But my body was falling apart.

I wasn't sleeping. My shoulders were in constant tension. I'd lost weight. My immune system was tanking from stress. I had headaches that lasted for days.

And here's what I learned: A strong mind and a strong spirit can't compensate for a neglected body.

The reverse is also true. A healthy body with a weak mind becomes trapped in negative thought patterns. A fit body and sharp mind without spiritual grounding becomes hollow and lost.

As a licensed massage therapist and martial artist, I already knew this intellectually. But 2024 taught me it viscerally.

I started taking walks. Not for exercise—for peace. Thirty minutes, no phone, just me and Florena moving through our neighborhood. Suddenly, my shoulders started to relax. My sleep improved. My body released the stress my mind had been holding.

At the same time, I deepened my faith practice. Not because I had time (I didn't). But because when your body and mind are both stressed, your spirit is what anchors you. Faith became the foundation that my mind and body could rest on.

And my mindset work—the journaling, the self-talk practices, the cognitive reframing—became the tool that connected my spirit's deep faith to my body's physical actions.

When mind, body, and spirit work together, they become stronger than any single element alone.

The mind without the body becomes obsessive, overthinking itself into paralysis. The body without the mind becomes an instrument of pure reaction. The spirit without the body and mind becomes abstract, disconnected from action.

But when you integrate all three:

Your mind has clarity. Your body has vitality. Your spirit has purpose.

In July 2024, looking back at the previous six months, I could trace every breakthrough to a moment when all three were aligned—a hard conversation (mind) had earlier been prepared for by a cleansing run (body) and anchored by a morning prayer (spirit).

By the time we got to the second half of the year, I wasn't just surviving with grit. I was thriving with wholeness.

The Integration Audit

This week, assess your mind, body, and spirit on a scale of 1-10.

Mind: Mental clarity, emotional resilience, positive thinking?

Body: Physical health, sleep, energy, movement?

Spirit: Sense of purpose, faith/meaning, connection to something larger?

Look at where there's imbalance. One is probably higher than the others.

Pick ONE practice this week to strengthen your lowest score:

  • Mind: 15 min journaling or meditation
  • Body: 30 min walk or movement
  • Spirit: 10 min prayer or time in nature

Then notice how addressing one element affects the others. Integration works both directions.

Remember: Feed your mind. Fuel your actions. Find your fire. 🔥

Grit, Gratitude, & Grace Newsletter Reader 1 Insight From Me January 2024. Wife diagnosed with cancer. I had a choice—two ways to respond. The first way: Let it destroy me. Let the diagnosis become my identity. Let fear paralyze every decision. This would have been the easier path, honestly. No one would blame me. The second way: Let it refine me. Use the crisis as a laboratory for learning what I'm actually capable of. Let adversity teach me something. I chose the second way. Not because I'm...

Grit, Gratitude, & Grace Newsletter Reader 1 Insight From Me April 2024. Florena was in her third month of cancer treatment. I'd been unemployed for two months. We were $30,000 in debt. I had a job interview scheduled for 3 PM. The night before, I spiraled. Thoughts raced: "You won't get this job. You're not qualified. You're still unemployed because you're not good enough. Your wife is suffering and you're failing her." The next morning, I did something simple: I showed up. That's it. I woke...

Grit, Gratitude, & Grace Newsletter Reader 1 Insight From Me February 2024. One week after losing my job when I disclosed my wife's cancer diagnosis, medical bills started arriving. Then more. Then more. By December, we were $60,000 in debt. I remember a day I sat at the kitchen table, staring at the bills, thinking: "How can we get through this?" And then I realized something that changed how I thought about money forever: The debt terrified me more than the cancer did. And that told me...
