How autumn changed what the crisis meant

1 Insight From Me

January 2024. Cancer diagnosis. Job loss. $60K debt.

The crisis felt like an ending.

September 2024. Nine months later. Same crisis. Completely different lens.

Florena was through six months of treatment. Financial plan in place. Community had shown up. Systems had proven themselves.

The crisis hadn't gone away. But what it meant had changed entirely.

In January: This will destroy us. In September: This is refining us.

In January: I don't know if we'll survive. In September: I know we'll survive. The question is who we become after.

In January: Everything is falling apart. In September: Everything is being rearranged.

Here's what I learned about perspective:

Perspective isn't about pretending hard things are easy. It's about changing what season you're looking from.

In winter, life contracts. Trees bare. Days shorten. Survival mode is activated. When you're in winter, everything looks like December.

But September brought autumn. The leaves changed. Energy shifted. Even though the same challenges existed, the context changed.

Florena's cancer didn't suddenly cure. But six months of treatment meant we could see the arc of the journey. We weren't in the middle of the unknown anymore—we were approaching the other side.

This is what I call a perspective shift: Not denial. Not toxic positivity. Just a genuine change in what season you're experiencing.

By late September, looking at the year, I realized:

The person I was in January couldn't have imagined the person I'd become by September.

Not because the circumstances changed perfectly. They didn't.

But because I stopped looking at 2024 as "the year everything went wrong" and started looking at it as "the year everything transformed."

The Seasonal Perspective Shift

This week, identify a current challenge you're facing.

Then ask:

What season am I in? (Winter/survival? Spring/beginnings? Summer/momentum? Autumn/transition?)

How would this challenge look different if I were in a different season?

What would it take to move from my current season into the next one?

You don't have to deny the reality. Just shift which season you're looking from.

Remember: Feed your mind. Fuel your actions. Find your fire. 🔥

Grit, Gratitude, & Grace Newsletter Reader 1 Insight From Me October 2024. Ten months since the diagnosis. I took inventory of something important: Which practices from crisis are staying? Which are disappearing now that things have stabilized? This matters because the difference between temporary coping and permanent transformation is integration. Lots of people survive crisis by doing things they hate. They journal because they're broken. They meditate because they're anxious. They exercise...

Grit, Gratitude, & Grace Newsletter Reader 1 Insight From Me September 2024. Nine months into crisis. Three months until the end of the year. Most people would coast into Q4. You've survived this long—just finish the year. But I did something different. I sat down with the data from nine months and asked: What's working? What do I want to amplify in Q4? What do I need to let go? I looked at what had succeeded: Systems: The morning routine, weekly reviews, job search protocol had 90%+ success....

Grit, Gratitude, & Grace Newsletter Reader 1 Insight From Me April 2024. The church meal train started. People signed up. A schedule was made. Meals arrived daily—meal that aligned with our plant-based diet. It felt miraculous. By May, I realized: This can't last forever. The people giving meals have their own lives. Their own crises. Their own needs. At some point, the meal train ends. People naturally move on. The community does what it can, then returns to normal. And when it ends, you...
