1 Insight From Me

March 2024. I applied to my first job after losing my job in February.

Nothing happened. Of course not. One application doesn't get you hired.

March 5, March 6, March 7, March 8, March 9, March 10. Ten applications in the first week.

Still nothing.

By March 15, I'd applied to 100 jobs.

Still no interviews.

By April 1, I'd applied to 150 jobs.

Now I was getting responses. Interviews scheduled. Conversations started.

By May 1, I'd applied to 300 jobs.

Now I was interviewing regularly. Some positions rejected me. But some were moving forward.

By December, after 1,000 applications over ten months, I had an offer.

One application changes nothing. But one application added to one more, added to one more—that compounds into results.

Most people don't understand the compound effect because it looks boring. It's not dramatic. It's not motivational.

It's just: one thing, then another thing, then another thing.

Day 1: One application Day 2: One application Day 3: One application ... Day 280: 280 applications total

The difference between day 1 and day 280 isn't the magnitude of effort. It's the accumulated results of consistent effort.

But I see the same principle in every area:

Smoothies: One smoothie for Florena didn't heal her cancer. But 300 smoothies—each researched, each tailored to what her body could tolerate—that changed her nutrition during treatment.

Meditation: One 5-minute meditation didn't transform my anxiety. But 280 five-minute meditations over six months? That rewired my nervous system.

Journaling: One journal entry didn't clarify my thinking. But 26 weeks of weekly reflections? That became the framework for my entire approach to 2024.

Reading: One Psalm didn't establish my faith. But 280 Psalms, read consistently, became the anchor of my spiritual life.

The compound effect is the real secret to transformation. Not the big dramatic moment. The small consistent action, repeated 100 times, 1000 times.

By December, when I landed the job, it wasn't because I suddenly became brilliant. It was because I'd proven through consistent application that I was serious, capable, and resilient.

The same consistency that applied to 1,000 jobs also applied to my morning routine, my care for Florena, my spiritual practice, my self-education.

Consistency compounds. One day you're at zero. A year later, through tiny accumulated efforts, you're completely different.

I.

"Tiny changes, remarkable results. Success is the product of daily habits—not once-in-a-lifetime transformations." - James Clear

II.

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest, if we do not give up." - Galatians 6:9 (NIV)

1 Challenge

The Compound Count

Pick one area where you want results: health, career, relationships, spiritual practice, learning.

For the next 7 days, commit to ONE small consistent action:

  • 1 job application per day
  • 1 healthy meal per day
  • 1 message to someone per day
  • 1 learning activity per day

Track it. At day 7, you'll have 7. At day 30, you'll have 30. At day 365, you'll have 365.

Compound effects don't feel dramatic day-to-day. But look back in six months and you'll be completely different.

Remember: Feed your mind. Fuel your actions. Find your fire. 🔥

Grit, Gratitude, & Grace Newsletter Reader 1 Insight From Me May 2024. I had plenty of time. Unemployed, so no job taking hours. Mornings at home. Afternoons available. Evenings free. But I had zero energy. Running on fumes. Caring for Florena through treatment. Processing financial stress. Grieving loss. Managing fear. I could have had 16 hours a day free and still couldn't do anything productive with it because my energy was depleted. That's when I learned: Time management is worthless...

Grit, Gratitude, & Grace Newsletter Reader 1 Insight From Me March 2024. Three months into crisis. I was doing everything. Researching Florena's treatment options. Attending every appointment. Making smoothies. Job searching. Networking. Handling finances. Planning meals. Updating family. Being present. Being strong. I was drowning. Then someone from church asked: "Can we set up a meal train? We want to help." My first reaction was defensive. No. We don't need help. I can handle this. I can...

Grit, Gratitude, & Grace Newsletter Reader 1 Insight From Me February 2024. First day after losing my job and learning Florena had cancer. I could have relied on motivation to carry me through. But motivation is unreliable. It comes and goes. In crisis, motivation disappears. So I didn't build on motivation. I built systems. System 1: The Morning Anchor Every single morning—no matter what happened the night before—I did the same 35-minute routine. Water, meditation, gratitude, smoothie,...
